Music

Music is an integral part of the academic programme at Venta.  The programme begins with the Orff and Kodaly methods of tonal and rhythmic training which focus on the child's ability to listen, to match tones between instruments, and to transpose a melody from one instrument to another.  This programme requires that the child learn to play not as a soloist but as a member of a group, hence socialization skills.  The programme is extremely beneficial in refining language skills.

To reinforce the student's mastery of his/her own self listening, a great deal of singing is included in the programme.  At the Junior 2 level - grade 4/5 - the students are introduced to playing the recorder.  By Junior 4 - grade 6/7- each one is learning a brass, woodwind or percussion instrument and playing in the school band.  Music is a required course for all students, up to and including grade 10.

Physical Education

The underlying philosophy of Venta's daily Physical Education programme is "healthy body - healthy mind".  Our goal is to instill in the students a life-long habit of regular physical activity which will enhance their physical and mental well-being.

Competence rather than competition is our approach in the classroom and on the playing field.  All students, regardless of age or ability, are instructed in team sports.  They also participate in track and field, snowshoeing, skating and skiing.  Our annual ski trip to Mt. Blanc is integrated into the Physical Education programme.  In all of these activities there is a three-fold aim of refining the body, teaching skills and instilling the habits of good sportsmanship.  In addition to being a member of the Ottawa Independent Schools Athletic Association, Venta also offers an Intramural House programme - which involves all students and staff.

Art

Art is introduced in the curriculum, in a formal manner, at grade 8.   Students become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques and styles.  In the Junior School Art is incorporated into the curriculum and is taught by an Art teacher assistant, under the guidance and direction of our Art teacher.  In addition, several Venta students are members of an Art Club that meet twice a week.
