Grade 10's Support the Ottawa Mission:
The Grade 10 class recently volunteered at the Ottawa Mission as part of the Duke of Edinburgh programme. Some of the students were asked to fold clothes, towels and blankets.
In the process of doing this, the students realized that there is a real need for new underwear, socks, shaving kits, winter hats and scarves. The class decided to hold a drive for these items. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause, please leave the items in the designated box in the reception room.
Thank you!
Junior 3 and 4 Class Raising Money for Opportunity International Through Micro lending Project:
The Junior 3 and 4 students are participating in a large, year long project to raise money for Opportunity International, one of the world's biggest micro finance nonprofit organizations.
The students were inspired to do this after reading a story called One Hen by Katie Smith Milway. The story is about how a small loan given to a young boy in Ghana led to the creation of a large scale egg production plant that went on to help a village, state and entire country. It is ultimately a story about how a little money can go a long way.
The idea behind micro finance is quite simple. Opportunity International gives small loans (from $10 to $200) to small businesses or groups, in Ghana, who want to start a small business. The group can then buy something that will help their business get started such as material for sewing clothes, baking material, small livestock. When the business gets "on its feet", they then pay back the loan.
In 2006 over 50 000 Ghanaians received loans and almost 90% of the recipients were single parent women.
To give our students hands on experience on how this project works, the Junior 3 and 4 teachers lent the students $100 so they could take part in their own micro-lending project, in order to a) pay back the loan and b) raise money for Opportunity International.
The students are producing appealing, hand-made products to sell at each non-uniform day. They are making the items themselves and have to budget their expenses so they can pay back part of the loan each month.
The students and staff are very excited about this undertaking!

Staples Business Depot will donate $1 to local schools for every eligible ink and toner cartridge brought in by Venta students. This programme was launched on September 1, 2004. IN 2005, Staples raised $225,000 for participating schools. Every Staples store across Canada has a bin where empty ink and toner cartridges may be left; however, we would like you to save your cartridges and send them to Venta with your child, so that we can deliver them on your behalf.
