Venta Students Attending "Peace Tower Flag Event":
On Monday, March 29 the Grade 10 class will be part of a small group accepting the Canadian Flag from the Peace Tower.
This is in conjunction with our school trip to Europe to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Victory in Europe. The Prime Minister of Canada will present the flag to the students, who in turn will present it at a ceremony on May 5th in The Netherlands. The ceremony will officially celebrate the liberation of the Netherlands by the Canadians.
Venta is sending over 25 students, staff and parents to participate in the VE Day ceremonies in Europe.
Please read below for more information.

Misha Costescu and Emily Moshr have started a "Junior Running Club" to compliment our senior Venta Vipers. The club is open to all students in Junior 1 - 4. The students will run the Venta "forest track" which is the 2 km trail around our campus. The primary goal of the club is give our younger students an opportunity to get out, stretch their legs and take in the nature all around the trail. For example, right now, students can see various animals coming out of hibernation. The students will also be accompanied by several volunteer runners from Grades 9 and 10.
Plans are well underway for the trip to Europe to commemorate the 65th anniversary of VE Day. The trip takes place between April 27th and May 8th, 2010 and will include several days in Paris, the Normandy beaches, visits to the memorial at Vimy Ridge and other WWI and WWII battlefields. The tour will culminate in Holland where Canadian troops are still revered for their brave fight to force German troops out of Holland and to save the Dutch people.
On May 5 our Venta students will play a pivotal role in the Victory Parade in Wageningen. Attendance is expected to be between 90,000 - 100,000 people and will be aired on CBC TV. The Canadian Prime Minister and the Dutch Royal Family will also be attending. It is at this parade that our students will carry the Canadian flag that once flew from the Peace Tower.
The Venta students once again impressed the judges at our full school Science Fair in February!
The top three students from Junior 5 - Grade 10 are now preparing to participate in the Ottawa Regional Science Fair (ORSF) on April 9 and 10 at Hillcrest High School.
The students can enter their projects in one of the following six categories: 1. Biotechnology 2. Earth and Environmental Sciences 3. Engineering and Computing Sciences 4. Health Sciences 5. LIfe Sciences 6. Physical and Mathematical Sciences
Each year 200 projects from across Ottawa are entered and judged. Awards include cash and scholarships to universities. Participation in the fair also ensures our students' eligibility to compete for a position on the team representing Ottawa-Carleton at the Canada Wide Science Fair.
Traditionally our students have been very successful at these fairs and have gone on to pursue successful careers in science and technology.
Please contact Mike Spratt for more information about the ORSF.
Most families with children in Junior 3, 4 and 5 are attending an Ottawa Senators game on
April 1st!
We are excited about enjoying a night out where the students, parents and staff can all get together for a relaxed and informal social away from the school Everyone will have the opportunity to have a fun night out with their current teacher as well as their future teachers. We are meeting before the game to have supper together at Frank Finnigan's restaurant.
Go Sens Go!
Over the past week Venta students have volunteered to cut a 2km long trail around the perimeter of the property.
The trail was designed for several purposes. First it will be used as a practice trail for the Venta Running Club as well as for in-school races and hosting multi-school races.
In addition the trail will be used for snowshoeing as part of the Phys. Ed. programme with plans to install "workout stations" around the track to make it a fitness loop.
We have also installed "nature observation" stations for the younger students.
The students are currently raising funds, by selling Venta Casual Wear, to plant trees to replace the ones which were cut down. The Grade 8 class has done a survey of the indigenous tress and soil so they can choose appropriate trees to be planted.
A big thank you to Mr. Spratt for spear-heading this great addition to the Venta programme!
The goal of the club is to promote health and well-being, while accomplishing goals in terms of physical fitness. The club is open to all students in Junior 5 (Grade 7) and up.
Members of the club will be running in the Diefenbooker Classic and the ING Race Weekend.
The game of chess has proven helpful in developing a logical mind. As a result, chess is being used in a new approach to mathematics. This year, more than 130,000 children in Canada will learn how to play chess as part of their curriculum.
Venta students will now have the opportunity to take chess lessons with a professional chess instructor as an extra-curricular activity during lunch.
Effective immediately parents can place uniform orders with Top Marks on line. Simply visit their website at www.topmarks.ca and click on orders. The school code for Venta is VEN01. Follow the instructions from that point.
